Annie arrived at our rescue with her mom, China. Gathered from the Paiute Indian Reservation, they were gathered, along with several others, and sent to the feedlot. Shipping to slaughter was inevitable if it were not for the special efforts of Shirley Puga - our Equine Angel. After funding was raised to save the horses, Shirley contacted us to see if we could make room for a few. Of course we said yes, and before long China, with her filly Annie, Carmen & Sis, Julie & Torche, Maji & Star, and a little guy that got lost in the mix up and taken in by Julie - Hondo, arrived at our ranch. Annie was adopted to a wonderful couple who have her fostered out to a 4Her.

Babe is a Nevada mustang from the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge and was part of the gather in the 2006 debacle. Babe & Cheyenne came to our ranch after the adopter could no longer care for them. Babe is one of the softest, very smart horses I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. Her willingness to please & love of attention, along with her beauty, made her one of the favorites at our ranch. Babe has been rehomed to The Tapestry Institute where she will be used in their education program.

Cheyenne & Neke were part of a joint rescue we did with 2 other organizations in Spring, 2006. Both girls are from the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge in Nevada and were in foal. A dear friend, and co-worker of Tom's, fell in love with her and agreed to give her a wonderful home. Ginger was foaled at our rescue while the new adopter was preparing her facility. Both still live at their forever home and are well cared for.

When possible we try to help horse owners problem solve their immediate situation before having their horse surrendered to our organization. Such was the case wtih Clue. I was contacted by a wonderful, huge hearted woman asking for help with Clue, who was underweight and sick with pigeon fever. She was doing what she could so I sent her some supplements, gave her a feeding schedule, and had a blanket sent to help keep him warm. He began gaining weight and feeling good, for about 2 weeks. At that time, Katherine noticed he was losing weight again and had blood work done. They found that even though the outside abscess had healed, the fever had moved internally. Making the right decision, Katherine had him euthanized.

Cupid was a very sweet older mare that arrived with Teddy & Miracle. She belonged to a wonderful young girl that loved her to death and used her for 4H & gaming. However, after arriving at our ranch and going through our intake process we found that Cupid had horrible crepidice (bone against bone) in her hind end which caused significant pain to the point that she would keep one hoof off the ground when standing, and would limp when walking. We believed she had lived a quality life and it was time to help her move on so we had her euthanized.

Hank was our very first mustang rescue. We received a call from BLM about a horse that had been abandoned in a round pen belonging to a neighbor. Out of 6 horses, Hank was the only one that didn't get on the truck the night before. Thin, scared, and in poor condition we were going to give him a few days to settle. He was not trusting and we were unable to handle him at first.
However, the following day after arriving I was in our yard working when I glanced over and saw my young granddaughter feeding Hank apples. It was at that point he changed and began wanting constant attention. We rehabilitated him and he now lives at a great home west of Portland, with Honey.

Another call for assistance, Hank arrived in July, 2008, after his owners had been killed in an accident. A wonderful old man, Hank had foundered and showed signs of Cushings. We immediately changed his diet, had his feet done, and put boots on his hooves to allow him a little more comfort while we worked on rehabilitating him. However, 3 short weeks later Hank gave up on life and had to be put down.

Both ot these boys came in with the Pauite Indian horse rescue. Torche appeared to be an orphan whose mom probably got mixed up in another shipment from the same rescue, so Julie (Hondo's mom) raised him, too. As yearlings these 2 found a good home in southern Oregon called Santuary One. Visit their site to see any updates.

I received a call asking me to please take this young gelding in. The owner told me that he had cut his foot and she had had the vet out but that she was not able to do the follow up care because the young guy was more than she could handle. I had made a trip to Portland that day & told her I would stop on my way back to Roseburg to see what I could do to help her clean the wound and try to help her out. Lightening is a gorgeous Arabian youngster that was being kept in a small 8x8 "stall" with no roof to protect him from the weather. His wound was bad and the granualation had gotten out of control. He was going to need surgery and definitely out of his location. Together I worked with the owner to clean the wound and rebandage it and advised her on improvements that needed to be done. When I got home I put out an urgent request to my network, looking for someone to take him in. One wonderful woman stepped up. Arrangements were made to transport Lightening back to her facility, and surgery was done to correct the wound. You can see from the photo how well he is being cared for. Thank you, Jamie.

Misty, a Kiger mustang mare, came
to WWER in June, 2004. Answering an ad in the newspaper we found that
the conditions Misty was living in to be unacceptable. With very
little to eat and no handling, Misty came around quickly with love and
attention. Not long after coming to WWER, I was able to ride her
bareback with just a halter. She was adopted by a great family as a
children's horse and is being spoiled.

Through one of our network contacts we were asked if we could help take in 2 horses that were in need - Pete & Desert Rose. When we arrived at the owner's property I noticed someone had roped Pete & tied the rope around a post. Tugging in panic to get away, the rope tightened enough to choke Pete out, and he fell through the fence to the ground. After cutting the rope to let him go I walked out to the calf deep muck to check him and reassure him. It took us a bit of time to gain his trust, but Pete was forgiving and it wasn't long before we could work with him. He had so much fun playing chase with the other 2 yr olds (Charlie & Eddie), and has been adopted out to a great family where he is continuing his training.

Meet Portia
I was contacted by the BLM for assistance with 5 titled mustangs in Washington that needed a home as soon as possible or the owner was going to send them to the feedlot. Working with a rescuer in the area, and through the generosity of Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue, we were able to take the 3 horses that were left. The girls layed over at our facility for a while until all documents could be prepared and some gentling done, and then we hauled them to Lifesaver's facility in California.
Meet Oprah And, this is Tira Mitzu, another mare we pulled off the feedlot with the help of Lifesavers. This sweet mare was also transported to Lifesavers facility in California.

(October, 2006) Sweet Pea a young mustang filly whose adopter/rescuer didn't give up on. Nancy contacted me from Tennessee, and together we worked on training efforts via email to get a tight halter removed from a mustang filly that had been abandoned. Today Sweet Pea is a happy girl living and being loved by Nancy
(April, 2007) BrooklynI was contacted by an old friend about a divorce situation and a mare that was "too high" for the woman to handle. After finding out that the horse was stall bound all day, eating alfalfa and high carb grain, and not being handled, the answer was easy. When we picked up this beautiful, broke to ride, mare she calmly let my husband put her halter on and walked into the trailer, as if grateful to be leaving. We delivered her to a new home where she was ridden the next day on a 7 mile trail ride.
(May, 2007) Picasso - contacted by the Harris' asking for assistance in placing a gelding. I assisted them in finding a qualified adopter and they were able to place him without him having to come to our rescue first.
(March, 2008) I was contacted about 5 mustang mares that were part of a large seizure and were temporarily housed in Kentucky. We offered to take the horses here and began working on transportation. Due to the distance I was able to locate a closer home willing to take them. Unfortunately, they became part of the 3 Strikes Ranch seizure. However, I was able to relocate a new forever home for them at Grey Oaks Farm in Oklahoma where they are living a wonderful life now.
(January, 2009) Ghost an 18 yr old gelding that had been abandoned at a barn. He was at least 400 lbs underweight and depressed. A concerned person contacted me with the information. They were able to take legal possesion of him. I supplied him with quality supplements that we use for all our horses - Necessity, and a donor sent him a blanket. Via email we were able to work together to get Ghost back on his feet
These are only a few. We've also been invoved in facilitating a 14 horse rescue out of the Eugene, Oregon area with another rescue. Asked to help place 30 "Comstock" horses out of Nevada that had been gathered by the Dept of Ag and had no place to go. Asked to assist and facilitate a 30 horse seizure out of Central Oregon, and the list goes on. We love what we do, and will help when we can. If you have any questions about any of the horses, please feel free to contact us.

Avi is a super sweet mustang mare from the Warm Springs herd management area in Oregon. Captured at the age of 1, Avi found her way to a wonderful home with Steve & Laura. When the owner decided that this blind Appy gelding was of no use any longer, he was abandoned. We were contacted asking for help to place him or he was heading to the Safari where he would become food for the animals there. I immediately made arrangements to bring him to our facility and called
Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary in Montana. Steve Smith was phenomenal and without hesitation agreed to take him in as a permanent resident. Bo was with us for a few days, adjusting to a pen and teaching me a lot. He was loaded into a professional hauling trailer and traveled first class to his new home thanks to Bob Hubbard transport, where he has friends that are like him. We are so grateful to Rolling Dog for all their work.

A one in a lifetime kind of guy, I had been contacted by another rescue trying to help place Bubba. Being raised with horses, my sister got the bug and wanted to get back in to them. I told her about Bubba and she made arrangements to go meet & ride him. It was love. Bubba was given a phenomenally spoiled home where he was ridden daily and the bond between he & my sister grew stronger. Unfortunately, Bubba had a tumor that attached itself to his colon. He showed no signs of illness until the morning he had to be put down. He is a great loss to all of us.

Mr. Personality -- Chief had been used as an endurance horse for many years. When he got older the owner sold him to a woman for a companion horse. Someone looking to buy a horse where Chief was at took both horses because Chief appeared to be in poor condition. She spent time trying to rehabilitate him and gave him to someone that lived at our facility for a while. When those people left, they abandoned Chief with us. Already a part of our herd we moved forward to care for him properly by having his teeth floated and putting him on quality feed. He quickly began gaining weight and was fun to be around. Chief, Frankie, and Misty (the one eyed mustang filly) are living a magnificent life in California now with a fantastic couple who have huge hearts for the welfare of animals.

I first met Fawn's "mom" when I was helping her with another foal that had knock knees. Fawn was only a week old at the time and living in their garage. The day she was born her biological mom rejected her so her human mom was doing her best to keep her alive. It was one of those - her father was her uncle & brother situation, and mustangs will cull their own when needed, which is a possible reason mom rejected her. The following week the owner contacted me asking me to please take Fawn because she couldn't do the feeding schedule. I was more than willing to set her up in a stall at our facility and consulted with another rescue, who had a perfect situation already set up and she agreed to take her. For more information on Fawn contact Strawberry Mountain Mustangs.

Maji is an absolutely gorgeous mustang mare that was part of the Paiute Indian horse rescue. She arrived with Star by her side and pregnant with Stormy. With a long flowing mane and typical short stature, Maji appears to have a lot of characteristics common for the true mustangs. She is a soft girl with a lot of willingness to join up. Knowing that she will have a phenomenal home, Maji has been adopted out to one of our top volunteers.

Misty had been born at the Burns facility, without an eye. The BLM newsletter came out announcing that she needed a home - it appeared that no one wanted her. I immediately contacted Burns personal and made arrangements to adopt her. When she arrived at our facility she was so coated with baby fur and manure, and had no intention of letting us try to help her. This young girl bit & kicked me more than any horse I had ever dealt with. But, determination to help her, and seeing it as a challenge, I persisted. It took nearly 3 months to finally rid all the "yuck" and give her a shiny new coat, gentling her in the interim to a very willing girl. Misty taught me more than any horse ever has. Standing taller than any horse on the property at 3 yrs old and one of the easiest going, Misty was transferred to a foster home where Ariel continued her training until she was adopted by a wonderful woman in California.

Molly was a sweet older mare that had a very loving owner who contacted us asking for assistance. Molly's health was declining and the young owner needed to put her down but couldn't afford to. Phoenix & River arrived at our ranch after BLM contacted us asking us to foster them until a permanent home could be found. The mares had been fostered at another facility where the owner could not control the stallion in his care and he was allowed to stay in the field with the mares, and both arrived in foal. We were able to rehome Phoenix to a home in southern Washington. But, due to personal circumstances we were asked to help find her another home. Phoenix is now part of a wonderful group of horses in a loving home with her son, Prize.

River came to our rescue with Phoenix (see above). She is a very sweet mare that I spent a lot of time with when she was in foal. Ronnie was a month overdue when he was born. Because of this he was born with significant knock knees & bowed hind legs. Fortunately, his body caught up to him and the legs straightened within a few weeks. A super sweet, easy going young man, Ronnie was easy to gentle, lead, trailer, and stand for farrier work. Today he lives in Colorado with his mom where he will continue his training and be used in the mustang education program at The Tapestry Institute.

While scanning the ads for horses that might be at risk I came across one for Tiki. Owner was desperate to find a home for this "broke to ride" mare whose children had been riding her. Once I saw this mare it was an immediate vet check to verify what I knew. She looked as if she was sliding to a stop while just standing there. Her hind end was gone.
