I grew up with horses, not cows. I knew that if we had cows I'd get attached and there would be a fight about turning them in to ground beef. Well, it's happened. I got a call from my sister about calves that were being starved to death. To me, cows are cows and I couldn't let that happen.
I didn't know that this is standard protocol for bulls born to dairy cows. Unless they are going to be used for breeding the bull calves have no use and are allowed to die.
So, at 2 weeks old the 4 calves joined the critters at our ranch. Because they had been pulled from their moms we were back to the 4 hour, round the clock feeding, again! But, feeding these guys was no where near the ease as feeding Carson was. There was no patience and searching for mom's teets resulted in several uncomfortable moments! By the time these guys were 3 months old they were wandering the property, grazing, and drinking from the pond. I get glimpses of them from time to time but they are in their own world and enjoy it that way. The llamas are usuallly seen with them.
There's always an adventure at our ranch. We just never know what is going to show up.
