Up to date happenings at the rescue

On Wednesday, November 4, 2009, students and instructors from ABC Hoof Care arrived at our ranch for a day of trimming, gentling, and fun.  We are so grateful for all of their hard work and gentleness with our horses.  We thank you all.

About Us

Company Bio

First of all, let me make myself perfectly clear - Whispering Winds Ranch, WWER, and all associated with our organization ARE AGAINST SLAUGHTER.  We fight daily to help change legislation on the transport of horses to slaughter and all the actions surrounding that.  We don't raise our horses like cattle.  They are meant to be companions and not on our dinner plates.  We do our best to help educate people on the horrors associated with the slaughter industry, and I will continue this stand until the day I die.  I've been bashed because of my affiliations with those 4 letter organizations (ie AQHA, APHA, etc).  It doesn't mean I believe in what they do or who they are.  I happen to also own some domestics in those fields, I just prefer the wild ones.  It also gives me the ability to be more affluent in the horse community which allows me to be able to share the truths and my beliefs.  And, for those that come in to the rescue papered, it gives us the ability to access their records and help with the transfer information and bloodlines for new adopters

When able, we take in horses that are on the feedlots heading for slaughter and give them a safe place (Un Lugar del Refugio) to live their lives.  This is what God has called me to do.  This is where my life has been groomed to be.  Our hearts and lives are just more focused on the wild ones (but our home is open to all breeds).  We try to be their voice in this world of misconception.  To me, the wild horses are more pure, more intelligent than any domestic out there.  They have to be.  For generations they have had to survive without the luxury of a warm barn, good hay, grain, vaccinations, etc.  They take care of their own.  They are not inbred, back bred, cross bred, like so many of the domestics are today.  They don't show up with HyPP and other horrific diseases.  If a foal has a birth defect, the stallion generally will cull it.

We also take a stand against Backyard Breeders.  I don't care how special your horse is, it is not fair to continue breeding to get that "special color" or confirmation.  I have watched too many horses sent to slaughter because of the over-breeding of ranchers that just don't have time for those that don't fit in the peg.  If you want a baby, adopt one.  Lord knows there are hundreds of them out there.  If you want to experience that special birthing process, adopt a mare in foal.  It is our belief that those who continue to breed just to breed are heartless and uncaring of what happens to the horses/foals that won't bring them money.

I've also been accused of doing what I do for the money.  After I quit laughing I decided to address this.  If taking horses in to give them a better life and caring for them, mostly at our expense - NO, WE ARE NOT FEDERALLY FUNDED - I'm guilty.  But, brokering horses is not what we do.  I don't see rescuing someone's problem to turn that horse around and make a profit.  If I did we wouldn't have pastures full of horses that I won't adopt out because they are deemed either unsafe or have a disability.  I do what I do for the love of the horse/s.  The unconditional love that comes with these majestic animals if you give them the chance.
